A New Year always feels like a clean slate, a chance to start fresh. If you have been busy the past week making Goals, Resolutions, To Do Lists or even making your Annual Business Plans here are some tips to keep in mind.

Make It Specific – Give your goals some thought and decide which areas of your life you want to improve and it very specific.Instead of I will exercise everyday – think about how you will achieve that goal (Right from the type of workout be it at the gym or doing yoga, whether you will take a class or get a trainer, what will be your training plan, how near or far it is to your home or place of work, how often you plan to go, what time works for you) break it down. That will help you think of how committed you can be and about whether you will follow through.

Make it Measurable – Can you weigh in your results? Make Goals measurable in some manner. Be it checking what you weigh or if yours is to make time for family, will you be able to say that I have set aside an hour a day or thrice a week to spend time for my family or self. It’s simple what you don’t measure you don’t improve or achieve. Hold yourself accountable. Maybe tell someone who will be able to encourage you to keep your goals.

Make it Achievable – Did you take Goals that are really tough to achieve? A good way to start if follow thru is your problem is to start with smaller goals or just 1 or 2 goals and see how it feels to and follow it up by taking bigger challenges.

Make it Realistic – Are your goals unrealistic or not something even close to being attempted in the current year. Goals such as trying to drop 15 kilos in 3 months can be unrealistic and harmful to your body. Make every goal as relevant to your current phase in life as possible.

Make it Time Bound – That’s the beauty of a starting over in a New Year, you can set a time frame for when you want to achieve each goal. It can be something as short as a week to working on it for over 3 months to being able to complete something on your bucket list in that year like taking a specific trip or learning a new skill.  It’s a good way to measure what is doable or not.

Having reviewed your goals using the above guidelines don’t forget to add some simple and fun goals that will bring you joy everyday. Its more important to make goals or resolutions that you will enjoy.
