As an image consultant I constantly get asked by women and men alike, how I define style. What should their style be? Do they have style ? It’s been defined by everyone from actresses to designers, models to writers. So you will know that style is not just one thing, but a combination of different things. So here lets talk style, about what really is style to me. Although it may be completely different for what you would define as style.
Style is personal, it’s innate and instinctive, either you have it or you don’t. It develops gradually shaped by the environment around you, the circumstances of your life and growing up, your culture and values. It is also evolving continuously as changes in your Lifestyles, Families, Position in society or at work, your own individual personality takes place. It is created by what you are exposed to. It is about your attitude. Its about simplicity, elegance and being classy. Style is most definitely about having the confidence. It is understanding your body and dressing it accordingly. It is about understanding your lifestyle and dressing well for the life you have.
Excellent Style is not about wearing the latest trends or wearing only designer labels. If that was the case all wealthy people should also be considered as having great style and appear in all the best dressed lists. Style is not about being better than anyone else. It is not a competition. Style is not about wearing the tightest or tiniest clothes, that is just desperate. It is not about trying to be someone else, you have to be authentic to yourself. Be you. Yes take style tips from the world around you but make it your own with your own personal flair.
It is not just about the clothes you wear. It is also about the way you live and how you live. It’s about how you engage with people and the world around. How you entertain, if you’re a good guest, if you are generous in spirit and thoughtful with your gifts. It is about inner beauty. A well-dressed person with bad manners is just plain ugly. It is being gracious with people, acknowledging another person, being kind and sensitive. That’s what makes a well-dressed person charming and charismatic. Style is also about exposure to the arts and culture.
The truly stylish are people who are put together beautifully, original and creative with the way they dress, elegant and classy in their appearance, positive in their attitude, secure and confident about themselves, living their lives graciously and are charming, sensitive, well mannered yet connected to the world around them.
