How many of us really know how to apply make up ? by Nalini Pant, from The Smiling Bride
What goes first or what comes after ? This may be a mystery to a lot of us, some of us beginners do find it really tough to figure this one out ! Fret not coz we are here to simplify your makeup routine. Read on……
Step 1 – Cleansing. Preparing the skin before any makeup application is an absolute MUST! It’s just like we would prepare our walls before painting it. Preparing the skin cleans it from any dirt, dust or dead cells giving us a fresh looking nourished face, which helps your make up last longer and stay flawless. So start by Cleansing your face well with a face wash or a creamy cleanser to remove all impurities. If you have very little time on your hands then face wash works well, but do select one that suits your skin type. For Oily Skin we recommend Biotique Bio Neem Purifying Face Wash for Oily Acne Prone Skin, Neutrogena Deep Clean Foaming Cleanser, Vichy Purete Thermale Fresh Cleansing Gel. For dry skin- Avène Gentle Milk Cleanser , Nivea Aqua Effect Refreshing Cleansing Milk, Bioderma Sensibio H2O.
Step 2 – Toning. After cleansing use a toner on your face. Toning helps in tightening your pores and giving you a firmer skin. Toners like Lakme Absolute Pore Fix Toner, Fabindia Tea Tree Skin Toner are good choices.
Step 3 – Moisturise – Once you are done with putting on toner, put on moisturiser. Moisturising can be a two step process. If you are looking to target a particular problem in your skin , like sagging skin , dullness, blemishes etc. You should apply a “Serum”. A serum is a concentrated product which delivers the ingredients deeper into the skin and therefore yielding better results overtime. Try Bioderma White objective serum, Lakme absolute skin gloss serum or the youth infinity serum or the perfect radiance one, Kaya brightening serum, Kiehl’s Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution, The body shop Pomegranate firming serum. I would also recommend a good Vitamin C serum. Follow this up with a good moisturizer recommended for your skin type. If it also has an SPF it is easier for you. For oily skin we use Neutrogena Oil Free Moisturiser SPF15.
Step 4 – Sun Protection. Needless to say that this step gets added on if you are applying makeup during the day.If your moisturiser already has SPF , then you can skip this step, and girls if you want to save your flawless skin for another 40 years please do not step out without your sunscreen. The damage inflicted on your skin by sun is irreversible unless you opt for Botox for your fine lines and wrinkles. In the long run using sunscreen is easier. We love La Roche Posay Anthelios sunscreen SPF 50.
Step 5 – Primer- Yeah girls .. Primer is the one base product that gives your skin a velvety soft feel . Its just so easy to blend foundation over a primer.. it just glides on so smoothly. Here also there is a flood of primers available in the market . You could pick one based on your skins needs. For Oily skin use Mattyfying gel based primers like NYX Shine Killer, for Dry skin – Hydrating primer and dull skin – illuminating primer like Natio Ageless Illuminating Primer. L’Oreal Paris Base Magique Transforming Smoothing Primer, L.A. Girl PRO. Prep HD Face Primer.
Step 6 – Concealer. The name says is all .But there seems to be some confusion around where to use concealer. Concealer has to first be chosen in a shade that is the exact shade or closest to your skin color. Not a shade lighter or darker. It is used to help conceal the uneven pigmentation, spots, scars, marks and dark under eye circles. There is no rule that it is meant to be used only for the under eye area. Using concealer you are ensuring an even skin tone and color all over your face. But also remember it is a spot corrector meaning use it on specific areas of your skin, you do not paint your whole face with concealer. If your blemishes ( read dark under eye circles, pigmentation, uneven skin tone) are dark and need more coverage then opt for a cream of stick concealer.
We like Inglot cream concealer, Lakme Absolute White Intense Concealer Stick SPF 20, Colorbar Full Cover Makeup Stick. If you are blessed with few blemishes and fairly good skin then liquid concealers will work well for you! We suggest L’Oreal Paris True Match Concealer, L.A. Girl Pro Conceal HD, NYX Concealer Wand.
Step 7 – Foundation – Finally we are ready to now apply foundation . Choosing the right foundation is very important. Do not give in to the temptation of buying the one which makes you look fairer… its passé The foundation has to match your skin tone to the T. Ask the beauty adviser at the makeup counters to apply 2-3 swatches foundation on your jawline extending till your neck. The one which disappears into the skin is the colour to buy . Apply foundation with a Foundation brush or a beauty blender whichever way you get your results the best ( Look out for our next tutorial on how to use brushes) We prefer to use the following foundations Bharat & Dorris Cream Foundation Small for Heavy coverage, NYX Stay Matte But Not Flat Foundation Liquid- Medium coverage, Lakme Absolute Mattreal Skin Natural Mousse 16hr – Light coverage and L’oreal Paris Infallible 24h Foundation.
Step 8 – Compact/Powder– Come on girls. Lets set the foundation we just applied. If you need more coverage and you have oily skin you need to apply the loose powder with your powder puff in a dabbing motion. For normal to dry skin use a large powder brush. Use the brush to lightly dust the powder all over the face, first dab then buff it all over the face in circular motion with a light hand. This will give you a nice glow. Again we like Bharat & Dorris Loose Powder Big, Lakme Absolute Face Stylist Compact, Maybelline New York Fit Me Pressed Powder, Colorbar Radiant White UV Fairness Compact Powder, L.A. Girl HD PRO Face Pressed Powder.
Now your ready to put on your eye makeup, dab some blush, swipe on your lipstick and go !
There are also a number of brands that we like in the Marketplace like Mac, Bobbi Brow, Makeup Forever, Armani, Bare Minerals. Hence we advise you to do your research and choose your products wisely. One that suits your skin type, tone, color and budget.
